What Is ProloTherapy?

ProloTherapy works on the principle that the body has the natural ability to heal itself when the right nutrients are provided. ProloTherapy is derived from the Latin word “prolix”, which means to proliferate, rebuild and regenerate.

The cause of chronic pain

Ligaments are the “structural rubber-bands” that holds all joints together. Ligaments may get injured due to trauma and excessive use. Tendons are structures which connect muscles to the bone and may also get injured and be a cause of chronic pain. Cartilage is a “rubber-like padding” that covers and protects the ends of long bones. The cartilage gets damaged due to wear and tear leading to Osteoarthritis.

When these tissues are damaged, they often do not heal back to their original strength. This is largely because the blood supply to these tissues is limited (cartilage have no blood supply) and therefore, healing is slow and not always complete.

How does it work?

In ProloTherapy, a cocktail of nutrients is injected into the affected area following which, Ozone gas is also injected. The injected nutrients enables faster healing of damaged ligaments, tendons and cartilage. Ozone increases the oxygenation of the affected area and promotes healing. The increase in blood flow brings in regenerative growth factors to the site of injury. 

Ozone is a highly reactive molecule consisting of three Oxygen atoms. Being highly reactive, Ozone stimulates the chrondroblasts (cartilage forming cells) to repair damaged cartilage. The Ozone gas also causes expansion of the joint space and relieves pain in patients with Osteoarthrits (characterized by reduced joint space).

Results to Expect

The response to treatment varies from individual to individual and depends upon one’s healing ability and severity of injury. Some people will require only one or two injections while others may require more (in case of long standing injury). Each injection is given two weeks apart to achieve complete healing and pain relief.
