Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disease is a condition in which the immune system turns against the body and starts attacking normal tissues mistaking them for a foreign agent. Normally, the immune system can tell the difference between foreign agents and our own cells but in the case of an autoimmune disease, this distinguishing ability is lost causing the immune system to attack our own body. Studies have shown that though there is a genetic factor (20-30%) for the development of these diseases, it is the environmental triggers which play a major role in their pathogenesis.

Some of the common autoimmune diseases include: -

  1. Rheumatoid Arthritis
  2. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
  3. Psoriasis
  4. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
  5. Multiple Sclerosis
  6. Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  7. Celiac Disease
  8. Autoimmune Vasculitis

Patients suffering from any of the above diseases may experience a combination of the following symptoms:

  1. Mild fevers on and off
  2. Chronic Fatigue
  3. Skin rashes
  4. Joint pain and swelling
  5. Loss of hair
  6. Weight loss
  7. Muscle aches
  8. Gastric complaints

In conventional medical practice, much of the treatment if focused on suppressing the immune system with medications. While these medications are useful to control acute flares, taking them long-term can have serious side effects like getting serious viral or bacterial infections, reduction in bone density, weight gain, developing diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.

At Mirakle Wellness Clinic, we focus on treating the root causes which triggered the development of these diseases. The root causes may vary from person to person and through in-depth history-taking, a complete physical examination and through comprehensive blood, urine and stool analysis, we try to figure out some of the root causes and work towards eliminating them.

Our principles for fighting autoimmune diseases include:

Gut Health:

Our intestines perform the important function of breaking down food and absorbing water and nutrients. They also prevent harmful pathogens and food toxins from entering the blood.

Seventy percent of the immune system is located in the gut, therefore what we eat has a major influence on the immune system. If we are continuously ingesting toxins in the form of pesticides from food, gluten present in grains, lectins in certain vegetables, high sugar foods, it will lead to a chronic inflammatory state in the gut which can then trigger the development of these autoimmune diseases.

At Mirakle Wellness Clinic, we test patients for Leaky Gut Syndrome (learn more about it here), food sensitivities, hidden allergies and prescribe a customized diet and the right supplements and probiotics to heal the damaged gut.

Another aspect of Gut Health is Vitamin D Deficiency and Vitamin D Resistance. Vitamin D Deficiency is a pandemic and more than 3/4th of world’s population have low Vitamin D status. This is important because Vitamin D is essential for proper functioning of the T-regulatory cells of our immune system. It is these T-regulatory cells which make sure that the immune system doesn’t attack our own body cells and they also reduce inflammation. Just like Insulin Resistance in Diabetes, studies show that most patients with autoimmune diseases have Vitamin D Resistance which prevents Vitamin D from doing its job. So, a combination of Vitamin D Deficiency and Vitamin D Resistance can preclude the development of autoimmune diseases.

At our clinic, we have formulated a protocol to overcome Vitamin D resistance so that it starts functioning properly again.

Detoxification:

Heavy Metal Toxicity from metals like Cadmium, Lead, Nickel, Aluminium and Mercury has been shown to trigger the development of autoantibodies in experiments. These heavy metals are ubiquitous and can range from lead in paints, corroded water pipes, Aluminium in silver foils, and cadmium in cigarettes to mercury present in seafood. These heavy metals get stored over time in bones, fat, our blood cells, our nervous system and can leach out slowly and can cause inflammation. These heavy metals can also displace other healthy metals like zinc and magnesium and prevent their functioning. When the immune system gets overloaded, it can lead to the development of autoimmune diseases.

At Mirakle Wellness Clinic, we can test for Heavy Metal Toxicity and based on the results, patients can then undergo Detoxification Therapies (learn more about it here) with the appropriate chelating agent to get rid of the heavy metals. Detoxification is a slow process which can safely remove all harmful heavy metals without any side effects.

Reducing Chronic Inflammation:

Chronic Inflammation is yet another important root cause leading to autoimmunity. Chronic inflammation can stem from a chronic infection, gut dysbiosis, exposure to chemicals, etc. When the immune system is continuously triggered, they can start forming antibodies towards our own cells. Autoimmune Disease is by itself an important cause of chronic inflammation which in turn can lead to the development of another autoimmune disease. This is the reason why one autoimmune disease can lead to the development of another one.

The oxidative stress from chronic inflammation is responsible for many of the symptoms of autoimmune disease. At Mirakle Wellness Clinic, we test patients for inflammation and with the help of Vitamin C, Medical Ozone, Glutathione and other anti-oxidants, the inflammation can be reduced and the symptoms will slowly disappear.

Cellular Nutrition:

The nutrient levels in our body need to be at the ideal range for optimal functioning of all systems including the immune system. Nutritional deficiency is an important cause of a compromised immune system. Nutritional deficiency can compromise the ability of the immune system to clear out infections completely leading to chronic infections. They can also impair the functioning of T-regulatory cells.

After testing the levels of various nutrients in the blood, we correct these deficiencies with the help of natural supplements and a personalized diet.

Only when the above-mentioned components combine together will it lead to the development of autoimmune diseases. These changes take years to develop and this is the reason why most autoimmune diseases are diagnosed in middle age. At least 3 of the above 4 factors need to interact to cause autoimmunity.

Autoimmune diseases are complex and we have found that correcting the root causes one by one helps our patients get better.
