Medical Ozone Therapy

Key Points

  1. Ozone is a highly unstable, water soluble molecule made of three oxygen molecules.
  2. Ozone Therapy has been in use in various parts of the world (currently around 50 countries) for more than a century.
  3. In cancer, Medical Ozone Therapy helps by oxygenating the tumour environment, oxidizing the cancer cells, enhancing the immune system and improving energy levels.
  4. Ozone Therapy is extremely safe with minimal to no side effects. It can be safely administered even in patients who are undergoing conventional cancer treatments.

What is Ozone?

O3 is a highly water-soluble inorganic molecule composed of three oxygen molecules. Being a highly unstable molecule, it breaks down into Oxygen (O2) and Nascent Oxygen [O] within minutes.  Ozone therapy has been utilized and heavily studied for more than a century. Its effects are proven, consistent, safe and with minimal and preventable side effects.

Ozone Therapy Benefits:

  1. Kills all bacteria and viruses thereby preventing infections
  2. Stimulates production of anti-oxidants in our body
  3. Prevents and reverses degenerative diseases
  4. Improves brain function and memory
  5. In low doses, it enhances immunity
  6. Increases blood flow to all regions
  7. Reduces pain, calms the nerves
  8. Improves skin microcirculation
  9. Purifies blood and lymph
  10. Improves energy levels
  11. Improves vision
  12. Improves sleep

History

Ozone therapy has been in use since the 1800s and in 1896 the genius Nikola Tesla patented the first O3 generator in the US, later forming the “Tesla Ozone Company.” During the First World War (1914-18) doctors familiar with O3's antibacterial properties applied it topically to infected wounds and discovered O3 not only cleared any infection, but that it also improved blood flow and reduced inflammation. Ozone Therapy is currently being practised in over 50 countries around the world including India, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, America, Cuba, several South American and South Asian countries.

Medical Ozone Therapy in Cancer:

• Oxygenating the Tumour Environment:

Oxygen deficit is one of the underlying factors leading to the development of chronic diseases. In a large majority of cancers, the tumour environment is hypoxic (lack of oxygen). Ozone Therapy works on the principle that cancer cells cannot survive in a well oxygenated environment. Tumour Hypoxia is also the reason for some patients not responding to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. By improving tumour oxygenation, this resistance to treatment can be overcome.

• Oxidation of cancer cells:

Cancer cells, unlike healthy cells, do not possess enough anti-oxidants and therefore cannot withstand any oxidative stress. Ozone, being a powerful oxidant, exerts a damaging effect on cancer cells leading to their death. The Nascent Oxygen [O] combines with water in the blood to form Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) which oxidizes the cancer cell walls.

• Boosting the Immune System:

Ozone Therapy at specific concentrations can stimulate the immune cells to produce a number of anti-cancer cytokines (IL-2, Interferons, IL-12, etc). These cytokines can activate the Natural Killer cells in our body to attack the cancer.

• Killing bacteria and viruses:

In some patients, the root cause for the cancer may be a chronic bacterial or viral infection. Examples include Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection in liver cancer, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection in cervical cancers, Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection in some lymphomas, etc. In such cases, Ozone Therapy by killing the underlying bacteria and viruses can remove the root cause which lead to the development of cancer. Ozone is one of the most potent microbicidal agent and has been in use for sterilization of hospitals and surgical instruments for the last century.

• Improving energy levels:

Medical Ozone Therapy, by increasing oxygen delivery to tissues and by increasing the production of ATP (the energy molecule in our body) improves energy levels. Many patients with cancer experience severe fatigue and tiredness which can be greatly improved with Ozone therapy. Patients experience a sense of well-being as their sleep and quality of life improves with Ozone Therapy.

• Reducing the side effects of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy:

Most of the side effects from chemotherapy and radiotherapy are due to the excessive oxidative damage to the normal healthy cells. Ozone Therapy in low-moderate concentrations can stimulate the production of anti-oxidants in our body as demonstrated in various clinical studies. In this way, the side effects from conventional cancer therapies can be ameliorated.

• Detoxification:

Successful cancer treatment depends on a strong and on-going detoxification. Ozone therapy, by oxidizing the free radicals and toxins, and by stimulating the detoxification systems in the liver, helps to eliminate damaging toxins from our body.

Is Ozone Therapy safe? Can it be combined with conventional cancer treatments?

Medical Ozone Therapy has a remarkable safety profile with only minimal and easily manageable side effects reported. Ozone being highly soluble, it quickly combines with the blood.

Ozone Therapy is an adjuvant to conventional cancer therapies or other alternative cancer therapies and cannot be used as a sole agent.

Ozone Therapy can be administered when the patient is undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy as it will eliminate chemo or radio-resistance and prevent side effects.

How is Medical Ozone Therapy administered?

I. Major Auto-hemotherapy (MAHT):

In this procedure, 200ml of blood is withdrawn under sterile conditions into a special glass container, mixed with an equal volume of Ozone-Oxygen mixture and then infused back. The procedure takes about 60 minutes.

II. Ozonated Saline Infusion:

In this procedure, 0.9% normal saline is bubbled with a low concentration of ozone for about 20 minutes and then infused into the patient. The procedure takes about 30 to 60 min depending on the volume of saline.

III. Rectal Insufflation:

A small volume of ozone-oxygen mixture is withdrawn into a special non-reactive bag and with the help of a tube, is slowly infused into the rectum. It improves oxygenation of the intestines, liver and kidneys.
